Engineering Management is a specialized form of management that is required to successfully lead engineering or technical personnel and projects. The term can be used to describe either functional management or project management. Engineering managers typically require training and experience in both general management and the specific engineering disciplines that will be used by the engineering team to be managed. The successful engineering manager must have the skills necessary to coach, mentor and motivate technical professionals; skills which are often very different from those required the effectively manage individuals in other fields. KU's Engineering Management Graduate Program Curriculum: Unlike a traditional MBA, the curriculum is a specific blend of business, management, and leadership courses applicable to managing an engineering or technology-oriented business. Throughout Engineering Management (EMGT) studies, emphasis is placed on employability skills ; those desirable qualities that apply across a variety of jobs and life situations -- team-based approaches, written and oral communication skills, management of technology, leadership, and analysis and design skills. Career Advancement: The EMGT degree is among the top eight highest paying master's degrees, and the need for qualified engineering managers is ever increasing. For example, in the State of Kansas, the demand for engineering managers will increase by twice the national average by 2020. Using the most recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, for graduates of KU's EMGT Master's degree program the estimated career earnings differential between the mix of manager positions those graduates expect to attain and the mix of positions they held as they entered this degree program is $1M . Convenience: The EMGT Program is designed for the working professional's work-life balance. Courses have evening classes, meeting once per week, with recordings available for students' use both when prevented (by travel, etc.) from attending classes, or as a means of taking courses remotely via Distance Learning arrangements. Distance Learning also makes the option available to participate in class sessions while away from the campus. Most students are working professionals, taking one course per semester, and graduating in three to four years. Full-time students can complete the curriculum in one year. Cost: Most students find it's practical to complete the EMGT Master's degree using their employers' tuition assistance programs. Tuition and fees are comparable to other similar degree programs.
